History of Rathmulukanda Temple

Rathmulukanda Old Cave Temple stands as a testament to centuries of Buddhist heritage and cultural preservation. Established during the era preceding the reign of King Uttiya, this historic vihara was offered to the Sambuddha Sasana, marking the beginning of its enduring legacy. Since then, Rathmulukanda has been a beacon of spiritual guidance and a vital contributor to the nation’s cultural and educational evolution.

Perched atop the Rathmulukanda Vihara Hill, ancient caves whisper stories of a bygone era, bearing witness to the temple’s profound historical and cultural significance. While its origins trace back thousands of years, the temple’s documented history spans 200 to 300 years, reflecting a continuous dedication to fostering Buddhist values and education.

A pivotal figure in the temple’s modern history is the Venerable Henegedara Gunarathana Thero, who, as Chief Sanghanayake of Devamedihatpattuwa over a century ago, provided exemplary service to the Buddhist community. His legacy was further enriched in 1982 when the Most Venerable Hendiyagala Seelarathana Thero assumed leadership. Known as a golden era for Rathmulukanda Vihara, his tenure marked transformative advancements in the region. Among his many contributions were the establishment of local schools and the founding of Sathkorala’s first Dhamma school, the revered Sunanda Dhamma School. Seelarathana Thero’s life story reveals an extraordinary dedication to social development, encompassing religion, culture, politics, agriculture, and literature. An eloquent preacher and prolific author, he left an indelible mark on both the temple and the broader community.

Today, Rathmulukanda’s tradition of excellence continues under the stewardship of its leaders. Professor Madawala Seelawimala Thero, the temple’s chief incumbent currently residing in the United States, has been instrumental in promoting Buddhist teachings on a global scale. His contributions exemplify the temple’s mission to transcend geographical boundaries while upholding its spiritual ethos.

Closer to home, the Most Venerable Henegedara Siddhartha Thero, Chief Sanghanayake of Kurunegala, has undertaken remarkable initiatives to preserve cultural values and drive social development in the region. His tireless efforts have further solidified Rathmulukanda’s role as a cornerstone of spiritual and cultural enrichment.

Rathmulukanda Old Cave Temple remains a sanctuary of wisdom, peace, and cultural preservation. Rooted in its illustrious past and guided by visionary leadership, it continues to inspire and nurture generations, ensuring its legacy endures for centuries to come.
